Quinton de Kock knock of 97 (61) guides KKR its First win in IPL 2025....
Kolkata Knight Riders Bounce Back with a Convincing Win Over Rajasthan Royals
After a disappointing loss in their opening game, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made a strong comeback with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati. Despite the absence of Sunil Narine, KKR's spinners did an impressive job, restricting RR to 151/9. Quinton de Kock then led the chase with a sensational unbeaten 97 off 61 balls, including eight fours and six sixes, guiding KKR to the target in just 17.3 overs.
KKR's Spinners Dominate
Winning the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bowl first. RR's openers struggled early, with skipper Sanju Samson falling for 13 off 11 balls after misjudging a delivery from Vaibhav Arora. However, local star Riyan Parag, leading RR, electrified the crowd with a stunning one-handed six off Harshit Rana. He followed it up with a stylish lofted drive over the bowler's head in the final over of the powerplay.
Parag continued his aggressive intent, smashing Varun Chakaravarthy for a six over midwicket, but the mystery spinner struck back soon after. Varun adjusted his length and deceived Parag with a sharp 113 kmph delivery that veered away, resulting in a simple catch for de Kock behind the stumps.
Moeen Ali Shines with the Ball
Moeen Ali, making his KKR debut in Narine’s absence, justified his inclusion with an effective spell. He struck in his second over, dismissing the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal for 29 off 24 balls. Jaiswal, who had been dominant against spin in recent IPL seasons, misjudged a delivery and holed out to long-on.
RR attempted an experiment by promoting Wanindu Hasaranga to No. 5 as a pinch-hitter, but the move backfired. He faced just one delivery from Moeen before mistiming a shot off Varun to mid-off for a run-a-ball 4. This triggered a collapse, as RR went from a promising 67/1 to a struggling 82/5, disrupting their game plan. Shubham Dubey, originally not part of RR’s batting XI, had to be introduced at No. 7, limiting their bowling options for the chase.
Varun and Moeen were highly economical, conceding only a single six and a four between them, while RR’s spinners, including part-timers Parag and Nitish Rana, leaked 11 boundaries.
Late Fireworks Lift RR to 151
Despite the middle-order struggles, RR managed to push past 150, thanks to Dhruv Jurel’s fighting 33 off 28 balls and some late hits from Jofra Archer. However, the total seemed below par, given the dew factor in the evening.
De Kock’s Masterclass in the Chase
Opening the innings, de Kock and Moeen Ali began cautiously. Moeen struggled, managing only five runs off 12 balls before a miscommunication with de Kock led to his run-out. On another day, this could have been a turning point, but de Kock ensured KKR stayed on track with a dominating knock.
The South African wicketkeeper-batsman took charge, smashing 34 runs in the powerplay. He attacked Archer early, followed by aggressive strokes against Maheesh Theekshana and Parag. When Hasaranga dismissed Ajinkya Rahane for 18 off 15, RR sensed an opening, but de Kock, alongside 20-year-old Angkrish Raghuvanshi, shut the door with an unbroken 83-run partnership off just 44 balls.
De Kock reached his fifty in style, dispatching Hasaranga for a six over wide long-on. He celebrated with another six off Parag in the next over, and had KKR been chasing a bigger total, he might have easily converted his knock into a well-deserved century.
